Do I need a co-op work permit?
If you are enrolled in a program with a mandatory work-integrated learning聽component聽(e.g. co-op, internship, practicum), or if you are accepted into one of 色妹妹直播鈥檚鈥optional work-integrated learning/co-operative (co-op) education programs,鈥you will need a聽co-op聽work聽permit. This includes opportunities that are on- or off-campus, paid or unpaid, and/or during an academic term or during a scheduled break (e.g. summer break), regardless of the number of hours.聽
A鈥痗o-op聽work聽permit鈥痑llows you to work full-time during an academic term if:聽
The co-op, internship, or practicum is a required part of your 色妹妹直播 program; and,
Your 色妹妹直播 program approves the co-op, internship, or practicum.聽
You must have a valid聽co-op聽work聽permit before the co-op, internship, or practicum begins. In some cases, you must have a valid聽co-op聽work聽permit before being considered for available co-op, internship, or practicum opportunities. To avoid any delays with the start of your co-op, internship, or practicum, we recommend you apply early for a聽co-op聽work聽permit.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a聽co-op聽work聽permit, all the following must be true:
You have a valid聽蝉迟耻诲测听辫别谤尘颈迟 (or you are聽in the process of applying聽for a聽蝉迟耻诲测听辫别谤尘颈迟).
You聽are required to聽complete a co-op, internship, or practicum as part of your 色妹妹直播 degree program.
You have a letter from 色妹妹直播 (e.g. admission letter) confirming that your degree program includes a required co-op, internship, or practicum.
Your co-op, internship, or practicum totals less than 50% of your degree program at 色妹妹直播.
In addition to a聽co-op聽work聽permit, you also need a鈥social聽insurance聽number (SIN) to work in Canada. For more information about the聽co-op聽work聽permit,鈥.
When to apply for a co-op work permit
Programs with required co-ops and work terms
If you have been accepted鈥痙irectly鈥痠nto a program with a mandatory work-integrated learning聽component聽(e.g. B. Commerce, Corporate Residency MBA),鈥痽ou should聽indicate聽this during your聽initial鈥蝉迟耻诲测听辫别谤尘颈迟 application. You will then be directed to upload (for a second time) a copy of your admission letter as proof of the mandatory work-integrated learning. Once reviewed and approved as part of the application process, you will receive your聽蝉迟耻诲测听辫别谤尘颈迟 and聽co-op聽work聽permit at the same time.鈥
If聽you miss this step during the application process, you can鈥痑pply for a聽co-op聽work聽permit鈥痑fter you arrive in Canada. To avoid delays with the start of your co-op/internship, you should apply for a聽co-op聽work聽permit during your first semester of studies at 色妹妹直播.聽
Optional co-ops, work terms, and internships
色妹妹直播 offers a variety of optional co-op and internship opportunities. Students are eligible to apply for an optional co-op or internship after their 色妹妹直播 program begins.鈥疘f your optional co-op/internship application is approved, the next step is to鈥痑pply for a聽co-op聽work聽permit.
How to apply
The following steps and information are for聽co-op聽work聽permit applicants who already have a valid study permit. If you are applying for a聽蝉迟耻诲测听辫别谤尘颈迟 for the first time, you can request a聽co-op聽work聽permit as part of your聽蝉迟耻诲测听辫别谤尘颈迟 application.

You will be asked to enter a聽personal聽reference聽code. If you do not already have a code, go to the section, "I do not have a聽personal聽refence聽code" and click on 鈥淰isitor visa, study and/or work permit.鈥濃疉nswer all the questions that follow.

2. Gather the following supporting documents.
Digital photo (420x540 pixels)
Passport (only pages with stamps, visas, photos)
Co-op letter from department
Each document must be 4MB or less. Once you have all the documents ready, you should save them electronically as a pdf,聽jpeg,聽or Word doc.
Save or print your confirmation of successful transmission for your records. Note: there is no application fee for a聽co-op聽work聽permit.
Important information: After you聽submit聽your application, IRCC may contact you for聽additional聽documents. If you are contacted, make an appointment with an international student advisor by contacting聽international.centre@dal.ca to ensure you respond accurately and punctually to the IRCC request.鈥
Maintain your permit
The expiry date on your聽co-op聽work聽permit will normally coincide with the expiry date of your聽蝉迟耻诲测听辫别谤尘颈迟. You may renew your聽co-op聽work聽permit at the same time you apply to extend your聽蝉迟耻诲测听辫别谤尘颈迟. Check鈥痮nline, but聽note that these times are not guaranteed.
