Mike Evelyn O鈥橦iggins (BEng'19) delivered the 22^nd annual Dr. J. D. McLean Lecture in the McCain Building鈥檚 Ondaatje Hall on August 26, 2024 to a large audience of students, staff, and faculty.

A Dal engineering graduate, AUS hockey player, and two-time Canadian bobsleigh Olympian, Evelyn O鈥橦iggins talked about his time at Dal and the challenge of balancing his engineering studies with the demands of time in the rink and away games. He loved the sense of community he gained from playing on the team, but the pressure was hard on his mental health, he says.

In the year before he graduated, Evelyn O鈥橦iggins was invited to participate in RBC Training Ground, a talent identification and athlete funding program that is designed to find athletes aged 15 to 25 with Olympic potential. "It changed my life," he says.

A recruiter spotted his potential for bobsledding and Evelyn O鈥橦iggins found himself in Calgary training for a new sport. He quickly qualified for a position on the national team and a record-beating push also gained him a spot on the Olympic team, enabling him to compete in Beijing in 2022 and in Milano-Cortina in 2026.

Throughout his student and athletic career, severe ADHD has posed major challenges, which Evelyn O鈥橦iggins has learned to mitigate by rigorously scheduling his time. He has learned that he "likes the process of learning better than knowing. My mind works better when I鈥檓 absorbing information."

Reflecting on all the highlights and challenges of his life so far, Evelyn O鈥橦iggins says his main message to the audience is "say yes to life".
