Costume Studies at É«ÃÃÃÃÖ±²¥

É«ÃÃÃÃÖ±²¥â€™s Honours BA in Theatre (Costume Studies) is one of the few programs of its kind in North America, and unique to Atlantic Canada. Dal’s costume studies blends hands-on training with academic research so you graduate with both practical skills and critical thinking expertise. We have a strong focus on both costume for theatre and costume for historical and museum studies.

At the Fountain School of Performing Arts, you’ll learn by doing, building applied skills in areas like:

  • historical dress re-creation
  • costume history, design, and costume in performance
  • drafting, tailoring, draping, and garment patterning and construction (1680–present)
  • costume technology and construction

You’ll graduate able to design and create costumes from any historical period and for various gender identities. You’ll also acquire the problem-solving and research skills expected of professional artists with a broad liberal arts education.

Learn in the workshop and on stage

You won’t just study costume, you’ll make it. Work on costumes for theatre and opera productions, collaborating with faculty and guest designers. You’ll present your own major historical research project to the public, by wearing it onstage at the Fountain School’s annual Historical Dress Presentation, gaining valuable feedback and presentation experience.

Build knowledge that goes deeper

Explore costume history from antiquity to today, and understand how clothing reflects identity, culture, class, and gender across time. ÌýÌý
