This past Saturday É«ÃÃÃÃÖ±²¥ track and field travelled to Montreal where more than 700 athletes gathered to compete in the largest indoor track meet in Canada. Out of 23 teams, the men’s team finished in fourth place and the women finished ninth.

In the women’s 1500-metre race Ashley Ryer finished in third place with a time of 4:35.05. In the 800-metre relay Gina Stewart, Britany MacArthur, Caroline Schlosser, and Ashley Ryer all ran a season best to bring home the first place finish.

Coming up big for the men’s team were Simon Watts and James Gillis, who finished first and second respectively in the men’s high jump. Mr. Watts’ final height was an impressive 2.08 metres and Mr. Gillis scored 1.95 metres. Rob McCulloch finished first in the pentathlon with an impressive score of 3,545 and is now ranked number one in the CIS. Mr. Watts and Mr. McCulloch also scooped up first and second place finishes in the men’s long jump with heights of 6.65 metres and 6.50 metres respectively.

The men’s hockey team had two games this weekend. On Friday the Tigers travelled to Wolfville to take on the Axemen. Acadia scored two goals in the first period, but Dal’s Brendon MacDonald and Patrick Daley each scored to tie the game in the second period. Acadia scored a third goal to take a lead and although the Tigers pulled their goalie in the final seconds to attempt to even the score they could not overcome the Axemen and lost the game 4-2. The Tigers had no better luck on Saturday and were bested by cross-town rivals Saint Mary’s 8-2.

Men’s hockey will play two away games this weekend. On Friday, Dal faces off against UdeM and on Sunday the Tigers will take on the STU Tommies. The team will need to earn points this weekend to keep playoff hopes alive.

Women’s hockey had a rollercoaster weekend. Friday night the women faced a difficult 5-0 loss against the AUS number two ranked UdeM Aigles Bleus. On Saturday the women bounced back to crush Saint Mary’s 4-0 in the 2011 Think Pink game in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF), Atlantic Region. This win secured third place in the AUS standings for Dal. Forward Fielding Montgomery scored the first and third goals of the game to earn Subway Player of the Game honours. Miranda McMillan scored goal number two and defender Brooklynn Winch netted the final goal. The Tigers raised $700 for CBCF, Atlantic at the game. 

Tigers men’s volleyball had two big 3-0 wins against Memorial on Friday and Saturday. Sander Ratsep played consistently well, recording 12 kills at Friday’s game and 13 on Saturday.

The women’s volleyball team earned a 3-2 victory over the Axewomen on Friday night at Acadia. Third-year setter Sasha Kosanov led her team with 31 assists and four kills. Marlee Powers, a second year outside hitter, also played exceptionally well, finishing the game with 17 kills and 12 blocks.

This Friday, the women’s volleyball team will play the St. FX X-Women at Dalplex at 7 p.m. in their annual Serve for a Cure game in support of CBCF, Atlantic.

Tigers basketball hosted Memorial for two double-headers last weekend. The women outplayed the Sea-Hawks 74-71 on Saturday, but on Sunday could not maintain their momentum and fell 88-53. The Dal men were relentless in their games against the Sea-Hawks as they outplayed MUN 106-59 on Saturday and 96-55 on Sunday.

This week, Tigers basketball have three double header games. On Wednesday, February 2, Tigers basketball takes on Acadia in Wolfville. At home on Saturday, Dal will face St. FX at 6 p.m. (W) and 8 p.m.(M), with the women’s team hosting their annual Shoot for a Cure event in support of CBCF, Atlantic. The UNB Varsity Reds will also play É«ÃÃÃÃÖ±²¥ at home at 2 p.m. (W) and 4 p.m. (M) on Sunday.

Athletes of the week Robert McCulloch Robert McCulloch, Track and Field Robert McCulloch had a sensational pentathlon performance over the weekend and set a new meet record at the McGill Team Challenge to re-claim a number-one CIS raking. His point total of 3,545 included personal bests in the long jump (6.65 metres) and in the 1000 metre (2:47.28). Mr. McCulloch is a third-year science student from Glammis, Ont. FEMALE – Fielding Montgomery?SPORT – Hockey Second-year forward Fielding Montgomery played exceptionally well this past weekend, netting two goals on Saturday versus Saint Mary’s. Her goals led the Tigers to a 4-0 win over the Huskies and helped the Tigers solidify third place in the AUS standings while knocking Saint Mary's to fourth place. Ms. Montgomery received Subway Player of the Game honours for her performance on Saturday night. A biochemistry student, she is from Toronto, Ont.
