Tony Corsten

Anthony "Tony" Corsten – Nova Scotia
1940 - 2022
Nominated by the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture & Dairy Farmers of Nova Scotia

Tony Corsten was a life-long farmer, community volunteer, and a well-respected leader in both the local and agricultural communities of Nova Scotia. Known for his unwavering belief in "people helping people," Tony embodied the values of hard work, loyalty, generosity, and selfless service. His quiet but impactful support for those in need left a legacy that continues to inspire.

Tony immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands with his family in 1951, settling first in Ontario before moving to Antigonish County, Nova Scotia. Alongside his brother John, Tony established one of the largest dairy farms in Atlantic Canada at the time, in Harbour Centre. The brothers also operated a successful farm equipment sales and timber harvesting business. Always at the forefront of innovation, Tony was instrumental in introducing new farming equipment and practices to the province, mentoring others and sharing his knowledge without expectation of recognition or reward.

A passionate advocate for cooperatives, Tony volunteered extensively throughout his life. He served 12 years on the Board of Eastern Dairy Foods, which later merged with the Scotsburn Cooperative Dairy, where he also served another 12 years. He was instrumental in saving the Cape John Community Pasture by helping develop a cooperative model and served on its board for 22 years until 2022.

Tony also spearheaded the Antigonish Farm and Garden Community Investment Fund, helping to revitalize the local Co-operative Feed Store and ensuring its long-term viability. Under his leadership, the Co-op relocated to a more successful location and became the thriving Antigonish Farm & Garden CoOp, where he served on the board for 15 years.

A strategic thinker and innovator, Tony supported numerous farm successions, including the transition of his own farm to a young farmer through a creative lease-to-own model. This approach minimized capital barriers while ensuring the continued success of the family farm.

Tony's contributions extended to various organizations and boards, including the Foundation Board for the RK MacDonald Nursing Home and multiple roles within agricultural federations. His involvement was always marked by thoughtful collaboration and a commitment to leaving things better than he found them.

Above all, Tony Corsten was known not just for his many public achievements, but for his quiet, consistent, and humble service to others. He believed deeply in cooperative models and the power of community, always stepping forward to lead, support, and inspire.
